統合失調症の最中に作られた 奇天烈不思議録音集。 カセットのみのリリース。 2014-15年頃録音。 Totemo Cha "Pupil pillar" (cassette tape) Yonju Miyaoka whos suffering from schizophrenia -s'solo project with loop machine. ▽Stephen Matejka (AUTUMN SOUNDS) The prolific experimental Japanese artist Yonju Miyaoka decided to go under the name とても茶, or “Very Tea” in English, for this eccentric release on OCIRCO RECORDS. In just around 20 minutes, Pupil Pillar is able to transport you to a variety of different worlds of psychosis, madness, and also serenity. The record is almost entirely composed of guitar/vocal loops made with a Boss Loop Station, which is hard to believe considering how thick the environments of these tracks really are. Immediately with the first track 瞳柱の夢 (Dream Of Pupil Pillar), we are thrust into this world of chaos and disorientation with a repetitive short guitar loop mixed around vocal chants which sounds like you’re in the middle of a shamanistic ritual around a campfire. This is followed up with a few more disarrayed guitar-centered tracks until we reach 非情のマーチ (Heartless March). This track sounds like it could be a lost Gerogerigegege senzuri recording with an unsettling guitar loop leading the song. Soon after, we reach the middle of the record with “Cut My Sausage!”, the first and only track to feature drums. What starts out relatively calm quickly devolves into a chaotic frenzied assault of varied voices screaming and giggling, all with a constant bass drum in the background to build tension. After this, 骨抜きの儀 (Unborned Ceremony) begins. A quick vocal sample which sounds like a smooth surface being rubbed is looped and played alone until other ethereal and demonic voices appear just to disappear again into the same loop. The album’s closer, 闇夜のうた (A Song of Dark Night), is the most accessible track on the album, but is also the most fitting closer possible. Accompanied by a twangy reverb-y electric guitar performance, Yonju’s singing gives a haunting yet very serene feel, very similar to an indie rock track you might hear from the United States. The cassette/digital download also includes the bonus track 第8星人のテーマ (Eighth-Star Theme), which Yonju made with his sister. The guitar loop in this track is super catchy and also has vocals from both Yonju and his sister. There is something for everyone on this album, and it is undeniable that Yonju Miyaoka is one of the most unique underground acts out of Japan right now, and you should definitely keep an eye out for their releases.
